In keeping with the theme from last week of believing in your dreams (be sure to check out “Friday Inspiration: Believe in Your Dreams”), it is an honor to celebrate the legacy of such a great man with an amazing dream.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. inspired an entire nation with his message of equality, peace, and freedom.  The beauty and power in his message is that the principles he believed in are universal and should definitely be practiced worldwide.

EQUALITY

“Now, I say to you today my friends, even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: – ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.'”

PEACE

“Nonviolence is the answer to the crucial political and moral questions of our time; the need for mankind to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to oppression and violence. Mankind must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression, and retaliation. The foundation of such a method is love.”

FREEDOM

“When we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of that old Negro spiritual, Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!”

Just as these quotes are a great inspiration so is “A Dream” by Common featuring Will.i.am, based on Dr. King’s famous speech.  Enjoy!

Don’t forget, today is a national day of service in honor of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday.  For more info on how to get involved, click here:  MLK Day

I will be donating clothes and coats that have been sitting in a bag for months now waiting to be given away.  What a great day to get up and give.

“Life’s most urgent question is: What are you doing for others?” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

I must say that my awareness is constantly rising and in paying close attention to this holiday, celebrating such an incredible man, it has compelled me to be a better person.  Dr. King’s legacy is the perfect example of the difference one man can make when he stands up for what he believes in.

Share your thoughts in the comments: What inspires you most about Dr. King?  What are you doing to celebrate this holiday?  What can you do to make a difference in someone else’s life, even if it’s something small?…  A phone call, a smile, a hug, a helping hand, an inspirational or uplifting word…  Think about it today and let this great example leave a positive affect on you that will last for many days to come.
